Daytona Beach Vacations

You may think that Daytona beach vacations are only for people who are fans of car racing. Predominantly this may be true, but there is more to the area than just cars...

The Daytona area calls itself the 'most famous beach vacation in the world' - that may be a touch exaggerated perhaps, but unlike many beach areas around the world, the name does conjure up an instant image, and it's cars.

The hard packed sand started seeing cars race in the early 1900s, with speeds of just under 60 miles and hour - way back in those days this was a monstrously fast speed! Can you imagine what it was like when Malcolm Campbell set the land speed record in 1935 at a whopping 276 miles per hour! This was over 70 years ago, and on a beach!

The solid nature of the sand is what drew the racers, and the local interest of Nascar racing grew from that into the massive national sporting interest that it is today, with the Daytona International Speedway still doing a roaring trade.

You can still drive tour car on the beach, but only to a top speed of 10 miles an hour - nostalgic fun more than anything else!

With 23 miles of beach and only 5 miles excluded from the cars, you may well think there's no point in going without a car interest, but in fact that's not true. That same hardpacked sand which drew the racers is a glorious white color, and you can quit easily enjoy the usual beach activities, whether that's a romantic stroll or playing frisbee with the kids.

Also within about a 1 hour drive you have a huge list of theme centres to visit, from the Kennedy Space Center to Disney to Universal and MGM Studios.

This kind of location to major attractions, plus its' own appeal, means that Daytona is by no means the sole preserve of the oil heads! That 5 mile stretch of 'people only' beach is a huge distance, much more than many beach locations have in total, so don't let that put you off.

You could quite easily book into a hotel by the beach, drive to a day packed full of adventure and then relax in the evening as the waves lap on to the white sand. If that sounds good to you then you are not alone, and it goes some way to explaining why Daytona beach vacations are always popular.
